THE COURSE

DESCRIPTION | This course explores an aspect of contemporary art practice, which this quarter will be ambient art. The goal of the class is to take on projects that explore this form conceptually and physically while building mastery in digital expressive forms. Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Macromedia Flash and iMovie will be used. Various output methods will be experimented with, including large format printing, transfer methods, and building websites. Students should have drawing experience and familiarity with the Macintosh interface. Knowledge of Photoshop is helpful but not required.

SYLLABUS | You will produce three projects that build upon each other, both conceptually and technically. The first project will involve research into ambient art and idea generation using the web as a way to share ideas and images. The second project will look at installation, drawing and sound generation. The third project will take the bulk of the quarter and asks you to respond to an aspect of the work of Brian Eno with a piece of your own.

There is an emphasis here on process and experimentation. You will be asked to independently learn new processes and also coordinate with other classmates in the use and implementation of hardware for sound and images and installation thereof. This course requires an open mind, time to think and energy and flexibility to work collaboratively.

COURSE PROCESS
Critiques on Tuesdays, roughly every two weeks. Most digital sessions are in Mary Gates Hall (MGH 058) and run the entire studio. Critiques will be in locations TBA (including SOA 110) depending on technology needs.

Work sessions are required. Please check email during break only. Turn off cell phones and IM during lab sessions. Working with headphones is okay, but conversation and collaboration across workstations is preferred.

Save often and with variant names.

Test and archive all projects the night before critique.

GRADING

Project evaluation is based on the following:

  • active participation in the studio and critiques.
  • in depth exploration of your ideas.
  • work complete at critique (projects not shown at critique receive no credit).
  • timely delivery of project files at the end of the quarter.

PROJECT EVALUATION | Individual projects in this class are graded with a 1,2,3 or 4. This evaluation is based upon the depth of exploration and conceptual & formal strength of the project. Your overall grade is generated from the evaluation of the three projects and is affected by your participation in critiques and in the lab. All project work must be complete at critique. Projects not shown at critique receive a 0. To make sure your work is ready for critiques, test, output and archive your work the day or night before the project is due.

LOGISITICS | Wacom tablets are available for check out in the lab in the SOACC. There are two labs in Gould Hall that also have Wacom tablets (but no styluses). Styluses are available for purchase at the University Book Store. These can be resold to other students for the following quarter.
