ART 370 | DRAWING FOR MOTION

TTh afternoons: 2:30-5:20 pm. Anne Stevens ahs@u.washington.edu

This class is designed for students who are interested in participating in the Animation Capstone project in the Computer Science and Engineering Department. Taught as a traditional drawing studio, this class will center around:

Drawing from life: observing structure, volume, character and gestural expression in the human body and our surroundings. Representing environments in which narratives unfold: placing figures in space, and looking at the development of sequential imagery and storytelling.

Connections will be drawn between student freehand work and the visual capacities engaged in conceptualization, modeling and rendering in computer graphics-based animation. Drawing experience is helpful but not necessary.

Projects

The body (keyframing): the hand opens/ watching a bird take flight

Compositional Methods: Ode to Clothes study

The body + space (motion) : Flipbook: A figure standing in a field

Light + composition (color & light): the story of Orpheus & Eurydice

The Story (storyboarding): a narrative told over multiple images.

Portfolio: Here is a .pdf of the handout that should go in your portfolio.

In class drawing sessions will support the longer out of class projects.

Evaluation and Participation

All work must be completed and exhibited by scheduled critique time. Projects not shown at critique will be given a zero. Every project should be kept in good condition, as well as in class exercises, as they will comprise a portfolio reviewed at the end of the quarter. Your grade will be positively impacted by active participation in class discussion, engaged and exploratory solutions to exercises, and coming to class prepared and ready to work. Your grade will be negatively impacted by a lack of participation or preparedness and late assignments.
