Prerequisites?

There is no formal prerequisite for the course in terms of language skills and major of studies. The course is designed for both majors and non-majors. Instructions will be in English. There will be a Japanese-speaking local coordinator who will provide language assistance throughout the seminar.

Freeman Scholarship: $1000

Competitive, merit-based Freeman Scholarships of $1000 each may be applied for by UW undergraduate students accepted to and participating in Exploration Seminars in East and Southeast Asia (Cambodia, China, Japan, South Korea and Thailand). The application deadline is March 1.

Approximately 25 awards will be made. Applications require a short personal statement and current copy of transcript. All applications must be submitted electronically via email. Applicants must be enrolled for Autumn 2010. To apply, send an email to explore@uw.edu with "Freeman Scholarship Application" in the subject line, and the following information as attachments:

A personal statement of 1-2 pages including your name, student number, year in school, and a short essay explaining the relationship between the specific seminar you have applied to, and your larger educational goals.

A current copy of your UW transcript (unofficial copies are acceptable). Students may access unofficial transcripts on MyUW through Student Personal Services. Use your UW NetID and password to access MyUW. Click on "unofficial transcripts" and request a printer friendly version in PDF format. Download/save this file and attach it to the email containing your application materials.
