2D gels: proteins are loaded in the ULC onto an immobilized pH gradient and migrate along the top border to their isoelectric point under the influence of electric fields.  The pH gradient tube is then transferred to the gel and they migrate in the y- direction inversely to their molecular weights.  Upper limit = 5000 spots (1000 proteins), biased towards abundant species.
