Biostat 580B - Statistical Genetics Seminar
Fall 2000 SCHEDULE
Sept. 26:
We have two agenda items. First, anyone who is presenting a talk or poster
at the ASHG meetings is encouraged to bring the poster or give a practice talk
in order to get feedback before the meetings. Second, we will make a list of
topics of interest to people so that when we pick journal articles this quarter
(and maybe the next) we will have some guidance as to topics. So everyone should
bring one or two topics of interest. PLEASE HAVE THESE WRITTEN DOWN so that we don't have
to spend much if any time discussing topics.
Oct. 3:
Elizabeth Thompson & Anne-Louise Leutenegger - basics of linkage analysis.
There are two papers you can read. The first is NE Morton (1955) Sequential tests
for the detection of linkage. Am J Hum Genet 3:277-318. READ ONLY THE FIRST 4 PAGES,
and the second is JBS Haldane & CAB Smith
(1947) A new estimate of the linkge between the genes for colour-blindness and haemophilia in
man. Ann Eugen 14:10-31. READ ONLY THE FIRST 2.5 pages.
Oct. 10:
Solly Siberts & Bill Stewart: Error detection in pedigrees. The paper to read is:
Boehnke M & Cox NJ (1997) Accurate inference of relationships in sib-pair linkage studies.
American Journal of Human Genetics 61:423-429. (you can get this article off of the web from any
UW computer by going to the healthlinks website -> reference -> journals)
Oct. 17:
WE WILL NOT MEET ON OCT 17. THIS SESSION HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED TO OCT. 19: Presentation of talks/posters for IGES/GAW. All who are presenting are strongly
encouraged to bring their presentations in order to get feedback before the meetings.
Oct. 24:
Amy Anderson & Soanli Basu: Boehnke M (1994) Limits of resolution of genetic linakge
studies: implications for the positional cloning of human disease genes. Am J Hum Genet
55:379-390.
Oct. 31:
Michael Li & Elisabeth Rosenthal: Neuman RJ & RIce JP (1992) 2-Locus models of disease.
Genetic Epidemiology 9:347-365.
Nov. 7:
Anne Louise Leutenegger: LK Durham & E Feingold (1997) Genome scanning for segments shared identical
by descent among distant relatives in isolated populations. Am J Hum Genet 61:830-842. You can get
a copy of this paper directly from the Healthlinks website.
Nov. 14:
Eric Anderson & Paul Scheet: Rannala B, Qiu W-G, Dykhuizen DE (2000) Methods for estimating gene frequencies and detecting selection in bacterial populations. Genetics 155:499-508. This paper can be obtained through the Healthlinks website.
Nov. 21:
Andrew George: summary of work done in Edinburg on MCMC methods
and information in pedigrees of different structure.
Nov. 28:
Mike Badzioch & France Gagnon:
Lee J.K. and Thomas D.C. (2000) Performance of Markov Chain-Monte Carlo
approaches for mapping genes in oligogenic models with an unknown number
of loci. Am J Hum genet 67: 1232-1250.
Dec. 5:
Do Peterson will talk about his own research on a distribution theory for
risk ratios.
