When is linkage analysis "nonparametric"?
In mapping complex traits, linkage analysis methods that incorporate
a specific model for the trait have often been unsuccessful, since the
trait model assumptions obscur the linkage information. However,
so-called "non-parametric" methods of linkage detection have also often
been unsuccessful, perhaps because they lack power. To map complex traits
successfully we need methods that have power, but which are not sensitive
to trait model assumptions? Can we achieve a successful balance between
power and robustness? How? What sampling designs?
