Statistical Genetics Seminar
Spring Quarter 2013
Tuesday 4:00-5:00, F643 HSB
CURRENT SCHEDULE
Topic: Ancient Admixture
Coordinator: Sharon Browning
-
April 9: Caitlin (+ Sharon)
Cann, R.L., Stoneking, M., and Wilson, A.C. (1987). Mitochondrial DNA and human evolution. Nature 325, 31-36.
Summary: Absence of deep divergence within continental groups and recent estimated age of most recent common ancestor of all human mitochondrial DNA suggest no interbreeding between anatomically modern humans and other homo species.
- April 16: Serge (+ Sharon)
Krings M, Stone A, Schmitz RW, Krainitzki H, Stoneking M, Pa¨a¨bo S (1997) Neanderthal DNA sequences and the origin of modern humans. Cell 90:19-30
Summary: Sequenced mtDNA of Neandertal and finds it does not match any human mtDNA. Concludes Humans and Neandertal did not interbreed.
Nordborg, M., (1998) On the probability of Neanderthal ancestry. Am. J. Hum. Genet. 63: 1237-1240.
Summary: Refutes conclusion of Krings et al.
- April 23: Jean (+ Tim)
Plagnol V, Wall JD (2006) Possible ancestral structure in human populations. PLoS Genet 2(7): e105
Summary: Introduces S*statistic. Finds evidence of ancient admixture in both European and West African populations using human sequence data.
- April 30: Brenda and Linda (+ Sharon)
Green, Richard E., et al. "A draft sequence of the Neandertal genome." science 328.5979 (2010): 710-722.
Summary: Neandertal genome is sequenced and shows evidence of sharing with Eurasians.
- May 7: Jan (practice for General Exam)
- May 14: Matt (practice for General Exam)
- May 21: Taryn
Reich, David, et al. "Genetic history of an archaic hominin group from Denisova Cave in Siberia." Nature 468.7327 (2010): 1053-1060.
Summary: Not just Neandertals; now we see contribution from Denisovans.
- May 28: No class due to special departmental seminar
Dave DeMets and Tom Fleming to give the departmental seminar on Tuesday May 28 at 3:30. The tentative talk title is This Could Happen Anywhere: Evolution of Translational "Omics" & Lessons Learned from the Duke Saga. Please plan to attend
Wednesday 5/29 at 2:30
Tom and Dave to engage in/lead a follow-up discussion.
- June 4: Liz
Wall et al. (2013) Higher Levels of Neanderthal Ancestry in East Asians than in Europeans. Genetics 194:199-209.
- Optional reading
Alves, I., Hanulová, A. Š., Foll, M., & Excoffier, L. (2012). Genomic Data Reveal a Complex Making of Humans. PLoS genetics, 8(7), e1002837.
Summary: Sums up the state of knowledge now, and what it means for evolutionary analysis.
Patterson, Nick J., et al. "Ancient Admixture in Human History." Genetics (2012).
Summary: Summarizes the methods coming out of the Reich lab for detecting ancient admixture.

Summary: Uses doubly conditioned site frequency spectrum to differentiate between ancient structure and ancient admixture.
