On a second trip to Sichuan in December 2008, Prof. Abramson traveled up the Min and Zagunao Rivers with Prof. Li Wei, and Tao Tao, Chairman of the Beijing-based design and planning firm WuHe International, to meet with residents, county government and development officials in the village of Taoping, in Li County, Aba Prefecture (Figure 2).

Taoping, famous for its watchtowers, is the most prominent village in a series of watchtower settlements in western Sichuan on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List.4 It is also a nationally-listed cultural heritage preservation site; and a regional tourist destination (Figure 3). The partners and their hosts agreed that the BE Lab would have an especially beneficial impact if it focused on Taoping.
