Bio A 388, Winter 2009
Human Fossils and Evolution

Course description
In this class. we will examine the fossil evidence for the evolution of humans, using modern evolutionary theory as the underlying theoretical paradigm. In order to receive credit, you must take both quarters. We will begin in winter quarter by revisiting evolutionary theory, musculoskeletal anatomy, and rudimentary biomechanics and then move to the early hominid record. Winter quarter will end with the robust australopithecines. Spring quarter will be devoted to the fossil record of genus Homo and to developing an understanding of the major themes in hominid evolution. Class time will be mixed format, alternating between lecture and practical demonstration. Attendance in class is, therefore, strongly recommended.
