Lecture Material and Notes Week 7, Lecture 19: Ca2+
metabolism and dynamics coupling neural excitation to mechanical output
Lecture theme and outline: How does muscle ensure that signals will be transmitted successfully from the nervous system to the contractile machinery - through the process of E-C coupling. The process needs to be designed for rapid, efficient and reliable conductance of information. To accomplish this the SR acts as a large storage site for Ca2+ and is designed with pumps and channels to rapidly release and sequester Ca2+ ions. The design is necessary for high frequency cycling of Ca2+ that comes with phasic activity of fast twitch muscle fibers. Control of SR Ca2+ release probably differs between skeletal vs. cardiac muscle, ie. CIRC in cardiac muscle while electrical coupling with the t-tubule may be sufficient in skeletal muscle. Buffers and pumps rapidly remove Ca2+ from the cyctoplasm to allow relaxation of the muscle. The Bers model will be instructive. Reading:
