Lecture Material and Notes Week 7, Lecture 20: Synapses
Lecture theme and outline: Transmission of information from neuron to neuron and motoneuron to muscle cells occurs via an electrical to chemical to electrical transduction process at the structure known as a synapse. The neuromusclular junction has been best studied and has provided a wealth of detail about how chemical synapses work. Release of ACh from the pre-synaptic terminal leads to binding on ACh receptors on the post-synaptic endplate, opening a channel for Na entry into the cell and depolarization of the muscle cell membrane and an action potential. Modulation occurs by ACh esterase and keeps depolarization short · Techniuqes to study transmitter release will be discussed. Reading:
