Lecture Material and Notes

Week 10, Lecture 27: Models of Energy Balance
Paolo Vicini

Lecture theme and outline: fitting a model to data to investigate aspects of energy balance.

  • definition of equations for energy balance
  • quantitative expression in terms of equations
  • integration of supply and demand: what are the signals?
    • Intrinsic mass action and feed back processes
    • Extrinsic activation, direct and allosteric
  • adequacy of assumptions: substrate for glycolysis and oxidative phosphorylation adequate oxygen adequate removal of products, esp. H+
  • principles of fitting techniques: (weighted) least squares, maximum a posteriori
  • model adequacy and tests for model parsimony: how many components and how many parameters? Guidelines?
  • parameter estimates reliability and confidence testing
