2. Read the attached paper by Frank Werblin [this paper is unfortunately NOT avaliable on the web, so you'll have to get the hard copy from me, Kai, or one of your classmates]. The paper is a few years out of date, but is a good summary of the field of retinal visual processing. The paper describes the response of the salamander retina to a bug-shaped object. Summarize the function of the following cells and how they affect the visual image of the bug-shaped object (about 1/2 page each cell type): photoreceptors, horizontal cells, bipolar cells, amacrine cells, and ganglion cells. Some of the figures were originally in color which are not well reproduced in the black & white copies, so it is not necessary to write down all of the details. Scoring for this homework assignment was as follows: (10 points possible): 7 points: Discussed all cell types mentioned above & demonstrated that you had read the paper. 3 points: Well written, organized, thought-out answer going into sufficient detail. |
