BMD interpretation mistakes - case 14

A 68 year old male with severe osteoporosis had been treated with alendronate.

The radiologist reported that there was a significant 12.3% loss of BMD at the spine (from .568 g/cm2 to .498 g/cm2), but there was a significant 8% increase at the hip over the same period of time.

He did not comment on the discrepancy. Can you explain it?
