Societal Impacts

How will industrialized countries' educational systems be influenced by rapidly changing information? What's relevant at the start of the quarter may not be by the end.
- We can already find information about anyone at anytime on the Internet. Do you believe in the future, restrictions, or censorship will occur?
- In what ways have recent developments in technology in the last ten years, with the exception of the Internet, enhanced our daily lives? The science world? The business world?
- How do advancements in technology affect the way we see the world? For example, Fidler says that the development of technologies that rapidly send information lead to a change in the way we view time and space.
- According to Fidler most innovations in communication resulted from the control revolution. With all of the technologies we have today, do we have more or less control over our world?
- The article "technologies of third mediamorphosis" mentioned the concepts of global village. It specifically uses television as the medium that represent this idea. What is other commucantion medium also creating the image of a "global village"? In what way?
- How do you feel about Marshall Mcluhan's ideas of "electric speed" and the effects of it on the world?
- Has our information community grown too large?
- Anyone know what Samuel Morse ment by "What hath God wrought" ?
- Does or will the Internet have any effect on third-world countries? How? How does this compare to the effect the Internet has on industrialized countries?
- In the future do you believe that there will be digital divide or implications with internet access across the U.S? What about other nations such as third world countries? Do you believe that third world countries will eventually catch up to the U.S in terms of access?
Adoption and Replacement
- Has the internet really reached the 'galactic' proportions they had hoped for back in 1967?
- What are some of the underlying factors that cause the slow growth of popularity when a new medium is introduced?
- Are there any examples of new mediums that didn't have to phase out old mediums to succeed economically?
- Based on previous trends such as readership and viewership of various media, do you think media forms will die out? Will there be rejuvenating elements to more traditional forms such as newspaper and radio?
- Do you think that computers will ever be phased out and remediated by some other device/form of media?
- Does the need for faster communication create new technologies or do the new technologies create a greater lust for faster communication?
- If the US is responsible for the creation of the internet how do we lack in internet speed and other areas as compared to parts of Europe?
- How was Bush's idea of Memex received? Did this idea provide the basis for computers or were the ideas he came up with considered to be crazy and outlandish?
- This isn't tied to the readings per se ... but how is it, given the power and financial strength of the United States, that we are not the leader in cell phone service and internet and wireless service?

When did FM radio arise? and what are the differences between AM and FM radio?
- Even with advancements in photography, many people still desire the old vintage style analog cameras that have the original quality and feel of old pictures. Do you think in the future people will continue to desire older generation technologies?
Media / Convergence
- How will Wall Street cope with the spread of new information? In that revenue reports, software specific to a company, or inside information will be that much more widespread and immediately impacting. Moreover, how will companies be able to inform the public as to what is real and what is falsely libelous?
- "Networks of Remediation" explains how new technology has changed the way me may look at actors or musicians. They are now "celebrities" rather then "artists". With the development of technology, i.e. iTunes, tabloids, gossip blogs, that actors will continue to loose credibility as "artists"?
- If film as a medium has characteristics that are "supposed" to go along with it such as sitting in a darkened theatre, how does the experience change with DVDs and downloaded movies, and do producers and directors account for these changes in this day and age?
- With the recent incorporation of viral marketing to attract and entertain consumers, in a society where much of our media is funded and controlled by large corporations, how do you presume advertising will evolve in the next ten years? Will we grow out of our dependence on it?
- How different would film or television appear if we were not so used to it and didn't see it as so transparent? Would they still have the same effect on our lives?
- Does Memex scare you?
- What are some examples of "new technologies" that are actually remediation of "old technologies" (ie: printing press created books that were like manuscripts, but "better")?
- Internet, Television, and Radio seem to be the most popular ways of communications this day and age. With the development of Podcast and On-Demand viewings, do you think in the future, internet will phase out the use of television and radio?
Future Technologies?
- We all had to think of what the internet might be like in 2045, but what will it be like in 3045? Will it have hit a sort of pinnacle of technological advancement before then or will it still be improving?
- Do you agree with Fidler that all these technologies are intertwined?
- Which technology predictions that Bush made have been realized? Are there any that you think will never be realized?
- What do you expect the future of technologies communication? Will our daily life be occupied with new media? or there are still population that support the traditional media?
- What do you see for the future of the internet? Future predictions or implications? Such as bandwidth problems? Maintanence? Costs?
