TSCREEN EPA's Air Pollution Dispersion Model (9/26/08)
Procedure for installing TSCREEN on your computer hard drive
A
1. Establish and identify a new file on your computer (suggest naming it TSCREEN)
2. Got to the EPA internet web site http://www.epa.gov/ttn/scram
3. Click on "Air Quality Models", http://www.epa.gov/scram001/aqmindex.htm
then "Dispersion Models" http://www.epa.gov/scram001/dispersionindex.htm
then "Screening Tools" http://www.epa.gov/scram001/dispersion_screening.htm
4. Scroll down the "Screening Models"
page and download the TSCREEN model code "Code/Executable Test Case" , Model Code
Code/Executable/Test
Case (1.6MB,ZIP) which is a zipped file. Download
this file to your PC and put it in a named file (suggest naming the file
“TSCREEN”) .
5. You need a program to unzip the TSCREEN file and you can obtain Pkunzip from the EPA internet site at http://epa.gov/ttn/tools.html. Download the Pkunzip.exe to your TSCREEN file on your computer. You can also use other unzip software.
6. With "Pkunzip" you need to be in the C:\ command prompt if you are using the Windows software such as Windows XP. The "Command prompt" is in the Accessories. Click on "Start", then click on All Programs, then go to "Accessories", click on the "Command Prompt", Type "cd\", then press the enter key. This should show all the files in your hard drive. Then enter your TSCREEN file by typing cd\TSCREEN next to the c:\. and press Enter. The screen will appear like:
c:\.cd\TSCREEN and then press Enter and you will be in the TSCREEN file.
To unzip the file with Pkunzip, type Pkunzip TSCREEN.ZIP and unless EPA has changed it, 5 zipped files will be formed (TSCRCODE.ZIP, TSCREEN1.ZIP, etc). Unzip all the remaining zipped files.
A
Then you can type "TSCREEN" and press enter and the TSCREEN program will start. This is for operating TSCREEN inside the pseudo MS DOS format. However, you can also operate TSCREEN inside Windows.
A
When saving your TSCREEN results, you might need to save them in a MS Word file.
A
There is an example TSCREEN
(actually SCREEN3 which is inside of TSCREEN) calculation of air pollutant
concentrations downwind of the asbestos plant stack in Libby
_______________________________________________________________________________
Problem: Libby
Given
Stack height = 61 meters Pollutant Emission Rate = 52.5 grams/sec.
Stack Inside Diameter = 1.5 meters Stack exit gas velocity = 12.92 meters/sec
Stack gas exit temp = 400 degrees K Ambient air temp = 293 degrees K
Rural Option Receptor Height = 0
Assume the asbestos particles are small and behave like gases
Find:
a) Maximum 1 hr, 24 hr, and annual average particle air pollutant conc. assuming flat terrain
b) Downwind location of maximum air pollutant concentration
c) Atmospheric stability class at maximum air pollutant concentration

Find:
a) Maximum 1 hr, 24 hr, and annual average air pollutant concentrations assuming level flat terrain.
b) Downwind location of maximum air pollutant concentration.
c) Atmospheric stability class at maximum air pollutant concentration
