Title: "Turning the Screws on Nutrient Removal:  Challenges in Wastewater

Treatment Design"

Abstract:

Many surface waters in the United States are suffering from nutrient enrichment which has

encouraged high levels of algae and plant growth with subsequent negative effects on the

ecosystem.  Point discharge sources from municipal wastewater treatment facilities have

been the traditional target for regulatory control of nutrients.  In certain areas of the

country, the stringent discharge limits for nitrogen and phosphorus have presented

technical and economical challenges in wastewater treatment. These challenges and

efforts in wastewater treatment design, process developments and research  will be described.
