The final exam will have objective questions similar to the earlier tests, covering only the twentieth century. It will also have five identifications and two essays. The identifications will be selected from this list

Essay on modern China: You will not be given a choice of which essay to do on the exam, but it will be one of the following:
1. Assess Mao Zedong's role in Chinese history.
2. Argue for or against the contention that most of China's troubles since the Opium War have been the result of imperialism and foreign intervention.
3. Compare the student protests of the May Fourth era with those of the 1980s. What do differences tell us?
4. Why did the Communist Revolution succeed in China?
Second Essay on full span of Chinese history: You will not be given a choice of which essay to do on the exam, but it will be one of the following:
1. Which two or three features of China's earlier history are most important to understanding China since 1949?
2. How do you explain the huge size of China today? Which dynasty contributed the most to making it possible for a Chinese government to rule such vast territories?
3. From the Chinese evidence, argue for or against the view that as societies become more modern, women's situations improve.
