CEE 494 ChemE 468 ME468       Air Pollution Control Equipment Design      Winter 2008

                                                                        Tu Th  10:30-12:20pm,  More 225

Instructor:  Dr. Michael J. Pilat, Professor of Civil Engineering, Adjunct Professor of Chemical Engineering

Course Description:  Design of equipment to control emissions of air pollutants from stationary sources.

Some coverage of fundamental mechanisms and processes of gaseous and particulate air pollutant control

equipment; control equipment for absorption and adsorption of gaseous pollutants; control equipment such

as wet scrubbers, electrostatic precipitators, and fabric filters for particulate control.  Procedures for

calculating the design and operating parameters for air pollution control equipment.  Case studies of

actual air pollution control equipment systems on coal fired power plants, pulp mills, aluminum reduction

plants, refuse incineration, and other processes.

Optional Text:  “Air Pollution Control: A Design Approach” 3rd Ed., by C.D. Cooper and F. C. Alley, 2002

Course Web Site:  http://courses.washington.edu/cive494

Grade:  Homework 50%  Midterm 20%  Final 30% (approximately)

Homework Problems:  Homework problems will be due at the beginning of the class on the due date.

Major credit for correct answers.  Late problems will receive lesser credit (points).

Calculation Software:  The use of Mathcad software may be helpful because example calculations and

homework problem solutions will be provided in Mathcad (probably Mathcad 7).
