Verification
of Ohm's Law
Goal: The purpose of this experiment is to verify Ohm's Law, and prove that
irrespective of the value of the resistance, the relationship between the Voltage
and the current will always be linear.
Setup: The experiment setup consists of a simple circuit with a variable
resistance and a simple emf (electro motive force) source.
Background: This experiment will help you in understanding the basic concept which led to Ohm's Law. Voltage and current in any conductor is independent of the resistance of the conductor.
The adjoining diagram shows a very simple set up of a circuit. The circuit has a
single voltage source and a single variable resistor.
You are encouraged
to choose a Voltage range and then vary the value of the resistance over the
range. As expected from Ohm's Law, it will be seen that independent of the
voltage range and value of the resistance chosen, the relationship between the
Voltage and the Resistance is always linear. This verifies the law:
V = IR
