Wednesday: Lecture by Jerry Laiserin

"BIM: Building Information Modeling or Building Industry (Re-)Modeling?"

 Wednesday, April 23, 2008, 6:30 PM
 Architecture Hall 147

Abstract:
BIM is not software. Software is not BIM. BIM is a process of representation, communication and collaboration. Automating that process does require software call it BIMwarebut automation through such BIMware is not sufficient. Every building industry player must understand what BIM is and is not, the benefits and trade-offs of BIMware, and the resulting effects on all project participants risks, rights, roles and responsibilities.

Bio:
Industry analyst and future technologist Jerry Laiserin helps AEC/O businessesand the technology providers who serve thembuild smarter through the integration of technology strategy and business process. His consulting clientele includes Top 500 design and construction organizations, public and private owner/operators, as well as leading vendors of software and services for this market.

Laiserin chaired the committee that oversaw and funded the CAD Layer Guidelines, one of the bases for the National CAD Standard of the National Institute of Building Science (NIBS); directed the aecXML Project for vendor-neutral data exchange, now part of the buildingSMART Initiative at NIBS; and created the industry-wide consensus around both the term and concept of BIM, for which he has become widely known as the godfather of BIM.

A Brandeis University alumnus, Jerry Laiserin also earned degrees from Princeton University's School of Architecture (MArch) and New York University's Stern School of Business

7. LAX Panelist Comment

"The BIMStorm was an eye opener that things are going to change a lot more quickly that we thought because change doesn't have to be planned out in advance. Everything is going to be out there for your application to access and we don't need an endless series of committee meetings to make this happen."??Mario Guttman, AIA? - HOK

Welcome!
Hope you had a great spring break and are ready for spring quarter.

This website contains the course content and this page will be updated periodically with course annoucements. So, check back regularly!

On your left you will find the navigation buttons that lead you though the course documents. We have weekly assignments, an ongoing term project with four parts, and a final report. On your right is a list of resources for course information and beyond. One key resource is the library eReserve, where you will find the weekly reading assignments. Inspired by these texts, writing assignments are to be completed on the blog. See the weekly blog assignment page for more details.

eReserves are in the online library for you to review. These documents are the main reading for the course and provide you valuable information for your career. This material may be used to develop your final report. Keep checking in to see what's new.

Computer Support in Gould Digital Commons

M.S. Student Basem Banabilah will be available to answer questions related to modeling or Navisworks.

Digital Commons
Tue and Thur  9 - 5
Sun  12-3

NavisWorks

This 3D model integration software will be used in this course to explore site planning, clash detection, and 4D modeling.  Copies of this software are available in Gould Digital Commons.

Autodesk

In branding their new REVIT line of Parametic modeling software, Autodesk coined the term Building Information Modeling (BIM).  We will be exploring some of the Autodesk products in this course, and these tools are available in the Digital Commons.

Bentley Systems

Graphisoft

Known best for their ArchiCad software package, Graphisoft has a set of construction management tools that seek to integrate planning and estimating data with 3D geometries.

Gehry Technologies

An invention of nessessity, Gehry Technology's Digital Project masters modeling challanges presented by the curvalinear forms of Frank Gehry.  The Gehry Partners' R&D team has spun off as a separate company that support robust parametric modeling.  Also available for review in the Digital Commons.
