UW accounts for web publishing (if not yet done)
-- basic HTML template for personal site (or see
these - I probably have
a free one that's close) -- criteria
for bios -- break
into assigned pairs for bios
- News! Windows Live Academic search goes live at 9 pm pacific. Screenshot
- I do a search for parallel computing
- I see the results
- I hover over on result by Xiaodong Zhang
(denoted in the blue shade toward the bottom of the screen)
- The preview
pane on the right gives me all the good stuff, I need: Title, abstract,
author, journal, author(s), publisher and DOI - Digital Object Identifier
- If I want the full article I click on the title. The publisher
will detect my IP address and know if I am a subscriber or member.
- If
I came from an institution that subscribes to the content, I will automatically
be sent to the full text (depending on publisher, there may be an intermediate
page with abstract and links to full text)
- If I don't come from an institution
that subscribes to the content, publishers show a user id/password screen
and also a "buy
item" option - you either login, or pay the fee set by
the publisher (in some cases there is no charge) and you
get the article.
Assignments for Next Week
- Blog Post (1): Find three sites with a presentation that epitomizes good
storytelling (effectively communicates compelling narratives) ... and three
that reflect a cluttered (or otherwise "noisy") presentation. List and provide
explanation for your choice. (Some of you did this already!)
- Blog Post (2): Readings: draw inference to current project(s) or work
