Why 342 students think (after one week) 20-25% of students, on average, do not succeed in CSS 342 the first time Follow directions ----------------- - Not following directions that are given. - Procrastinating on their assignments (not starting it until the last minute). - Don't read instructions carefully. Don't put enough effort into the class. - Because they don't have enough time to study. Also, students might be misinterpreting or not following instructions. Time management --------------- - Poor time management, not reading instructions, and not asking for help. - Do not invest enough time to study and practice. - Did not give themselves enough time for the assignment. - Don't have great time management. - Because they don't start their assignments early so they don't have enough time to improve their code. Not doing the work ------------------ - Not doing the readings, not attending class, and general bad habits. - Lack of planning or lack of preparedness. - Not enough commitment and time spent learning the material in class as well as not doing assignments outside of class assignments. - The language in CSS 342 is different, so they may not study hard to learn the new language. - They don't spend enough time learning the concepts, give up on debugging code they don't understand. - Mess up turning the assignment or mess up style and formatting. (Note from Zander - lowers grade, but usually not enough to fail.) It's just plain hard -------------------- - This class involves simultaneously learning a new language and applying new principles. This is usually the first time students are expected to do this. - Likely due to the fast pace of the course, the complex material, poor time management, and tougher grading. - People misjudge the difficulty of the class. - Not practicing code, not attending lecture, waiting until the last day to start labs, and not getting during office hours. - People are accustomed to the slow progression that comes with the java classes and do not prepare for the pace of the class. Ask for help ------------ - Because they do not seek help when they need to. - Past CSS 342 students recommended practicing writing code and discussing topics/answers with classmates. (Not homework, but general practice.)
