Grad Student Research Presentation:

Be aware and remember that Mobile Computing is a huge area of study, that in our class we are interested and studying the user application development specific area. Based on your final project area or otherwise, you should identify an area, a specific problem, or a class of mobile applications that interests you. For example,

·         Problem: Augmented Reality solutions on Mobile Devices

·         Problem: Location context determination (e.g., in a coffee house vs. a pizzeria) on Mobile Devices

·         Class of Applications: Mobile Casual games

·         Class of Applications: Mobile match making

·         Issues: User interface on small touch devices

·         Issues: Privacy issues

Notice, the area of study or the problem you identify may or may not overlap with your final project. You are not expected to implement your studies in your final project. This exercise is to allow graduate students bring the context of current issues in mobile application development to our class.

The following are some links to academic publication venues that include discussions on the current state of mobile computing. Remember: as a UW student, you have free access to (you’d have to login using your UW Net ID):

·         IEEEExplore: http://ieeexplore.ieee.org.offcampus.lib.washington.edu/Xplore/home.jsp

·         ACM Digital Library: http://dl.acm.org.offcampus.lib.washington.edu/

When researching and evaluating the following publications remember to the context of our class: Mobile Application Development, and make sure you reference papers within the scope of our class. For example, the following two well established journals are targeted more towards low-level mobile network protocol, device, and hardware efficiencies and are probably do not contain too many articles suitable for our class:

·         IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing: consist mostly of papers discussing device, and protocol-level issues and probably is not a good source for discussions of topics that are relevant to our class.

·         AMC SIGMOBILE Mobile Computing and Communication Review

Here is a list of publications/conferences that do contain relevant information. These are technically oriented academic publications and may not apply well if you are interested surveying classes of applications, for those, you should survey related magazine and trade publications.
