Course Description:

Cultural Studies Research Practices is the second required course in the core curriculum of MACS. This course provides a foundation in research methods utilized in cultural studies and prepares the way for the spring course on collaborative research practices. It engages three key modes of inquiry (textual, ethnographic, and performance-based methods), with a focus on Participatory Action Research, and introduces students to case study methodology.

Course Goals:

v To gain a theoretical and practice-based understanding of ethnographic, textual, and performance-based modes of inquiry, and interactions among these

v To gain an understanding of participatory action research theory and practice

v To acquire a critical understanding of the politics, ethics, and institutional requirements of research practice

v To increase your ability to think critically and creatively about research projects while attending to their scope and scale

v To increase your ability to think critically and creatively about assessing research projects, while attending to their scope and scale

v To prepare for your next step in the MACS program as you propose and pilot your capstone research.
