Preparing your Presentation

Though it is no longer mandatory as in the past, I encourage the resident on rotation in dermatologic surgery to prepare a 45-50 minute presentation to be made during the dermatologic surgery didactic sessions. It is my hope to slowly develop a library of Power Point presentations that will be updated by future generations of residents. This library will thus become an excellent learning resource in the future. The author of a presentation will be the first author. A resident who updates or edits a presentation in future years will become a coauthor. Although you will be expected to prepare your presentation, your contributing it to the "Derm Surgery Library" is not compulsory. With this in mind, please bear in mind the following guidelines for your presentation:

  • You may choose a topic (after discussion with Dr Berg). You are encouraged to prepare this topic during or soon after your 2 month dermatologic surgery rotation.
  • Your topic should be aimed at the level of your fellow residents. The subject matter should in general be practical and helpful for a dermatology resident planning to go into practice and preparing for the boards.
  • Your audience is your fellow resident. This is not expected to be as time-intensive as your grand rounds presentations.
  • Presentations should be prepared on Microsoft PowerPoint. Slides are sufficient; however, accompanying notes (which can be added to powerpoint) are encouraged.
  • A syllabus is not required, but a handout of the slides will be appreciated as reference material by your fellow residents.
  • You should include a title slide with your topic, your name and the date prepared. If you are updating a previously prepared topic, your name and the edit date should appear below the names of the previous authors.
  • Because the material may be published, any images, text or other material that would need a reference in a standard chapter must be identified along with its source. The identification should be sufficient for us to reference or obtain permission for use if subsequent publication occurs. The reference information should be either present on the slide or as an accompanying note in Powerpoint.
  • The master library of presentations will be maintained by Dr Berg. A disk or email copy of your presentation should be provided to Dr Berg.

Suggested Text for Didactic Program

"Surgery of the Skin - Textbook with DVD" - Edited By June K. Robinson, MD, C. William Hanke, MD, Roberta D. Sengelmann, MD and Daniel Mark Siegel, MD, MS. This book is available in the clinic and may be borrowed overnight. Alternatively, select chapters may be photocopied for reading. Other texts may also be useful - talk with Dr Berg for suggestions

Dr Berg's clinical Dermatologic Surgery Website has a links page with very useful dermatology and dermatologic surgery links and online lectures.
