Conversation & Culture/History Courses

(Term A), Spanish Conversation,

credits (numerical grade), taught by Mexican
faculty.
SPAN 299 (Term B),
Culture/History
Course, 3 credits (numerical grade), taught by
Mexican faculty.
The normal course load will be 15 credits.
Students may also participate
in optional
workshops in Mexican cooking, salsa dancing,
etc. No
credit awarded for these workshops.

Participation will include
up to twenty five
highly motivated UW students who have
successfully completed Spanish 103, 123, 134,
or 201 by September 2009 or placed into
Spanish 201 or
202.
1) Submit the completed application form
AND a copy of
your transcripts to the
100/200-level Spanish Language Advising
Office, Padelford
C-106 (or leave in Lani
Phillips box in C-104 Padelford Hall).
2) Have a professor from the UW submit a
letter of recommendation to Lani Phillips,
Division of Spanish & Portuguese, Box
354360. A letter of recommendation form is
available
in the Study Abroad section of the
department website,
http://depts.washington.edu/spanport/
Both steps must be
completed by 5 p.m., May
8, 2009. You
will be notified shortly thereafter
regarding acceptance to the program.
The cost of the program
(including a room and
two meals a day with a Mexican family, and
program
overhead) will be approximately
$3,200US. This amount does
not include the
$250 IPE Fee; air fare; local transportation;
(except for the
group excursions); textbooks;
passport; health insurance; pocket money, or
the costs of room, board, and transportation
for the mid-term trip.
Once you have been admitted
to the program
you will be expected to apply for a passport
and book and pay
for your own flights.

Withdrawal \ Refund Policy |
The $350 program deposit and the
$250 IPE Fee are non-refundable.
Any student withdrawing after June 26,
2009 will be liable for a set percentage of
the program fee, depending on the date of
withdrawal. No part of the program fee is
refundable once the program has begun.
Notice of withdrawal from the program
must be made in writing to both the
International Programs and Exchanges Office
and the Division of Spanish and Portuguese.

Barro negro (black pottery)
Classes will be held at the
Instituto Cultural
Oaxaca, a language institute
housed in a
Colonial style home surrounded by lush gardens.
Participants will be placed individually with
local families, with whom they
will take two
meals per day. The purpose of staying with
local families is so
that students will be
immersed in Mexican culture and have the
opportunity to
speak only Spanish for the
duration of the program.
