OAXACA PROGRAM– FALL QUARTER 2009

Every fall quarter, the Division of Spanish and Portuguese at the UW hosts a STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM in sunny OAXACA in southern Mexico.

 

Courses offered are:

Spanish 201     -           5 CR

Spanish 202     -           5 CR

Spanish 203     -           5 CR

 

Conversation    -           2 CR    (A Term)

History & Culture         3 CR    (B Term)

 

Requirement  for Span 201 and 202 → Span 103 to be completed or placement into 201 by Spring or Summer quarter 2009.

Requirement  for Span 202 and 203 → Span 201 to be completed or placement into 202 by Spring or Summer quarter 2009.

 

The quarter is divided into two terms – A & B. Students who have completed 103 or placed into 201 by the above dates will take
Span 201 during A term and Span 202 in B.

Students who have completed 201 or placed into 202 by the above dates will take Span 202 during A term and Span 203 in B.

 

Highlights of the program

 

 

Two grammar courses (10 CR) taught by a UW faculty member from the Division of Spanish and Portuguese

 

Conversation and culture courses (5 CR) taught by local instructors

 

Homestay and two meals a day with a Mexican family.

 

Workshops in Salsa dancing, Cooking, Weaving & Pottery
No credit awarded for these workshops. 

 

Intercambios with native speakers to improve your conversational skills

 

Classes held at the INSTITUTO CULTURAL OAXACA located on beautifully landscaped grounds.

 

7 day break between terms A and B. Students are free to travel and enjoy other parts of Mexico - beaches, ruins, etc - or doing something of special interest to you.

 

The opportunity to savor Oaxaca’s excellent cuisine and enjoy various cultural activities

 

Tours most Fridays to various points of interest:

 

Tour 1. MONTE ALBÁN (Zapotec ruins), ATZOMPA (Green pottery at unbelievable prices.) Bring some home for Christmas presents.

 

Tour 2. MITLA (Mixtec ruins). On the way back, see how Mezcal is made at a Mezcal factory. Get a taste of the different types of Mezcal, and if you are brave enough, try the worm! TEOTITLÁN DEL VALLE. See how woven rugs (tapetes) and textiles are made. Students will visit a local Zapotec residence where this process is explained in detail.

ÁRBOL DEL TULE. The huge cypress tree dated at over 2000 years old and measuring 165 feet in circumference.

 

Tour 3. Cementerio in Xoxocotlán (Día de los Muertos)

 

Tour 4. SAN BARTOLO DE COYOTEPEC (Famous for its black pottery. Almost impossible to leave without buying a couple pieces.  OCOTLÁN (Friday market). SAN MARTÍN TILCAJETE (alebrijes or wooden animals).

 

Tour 5. HIERVE EL AGUA. Take a dip in this pool of “bubbly source of water” from natural springs while you enjoy the beautiful scenery way up in the mountains.

 

Approximate cost of program: $3,200 plus $250 concurrent enrollment fee

Cost includes:

Housing plus two meals a day

Excursions and guided tours of major sites
