Course Communications
Online Forums Collect It E-mail E-mail list Live Discussion Other tools
We have several mechanisms for communication in this course, including online forums, a e-mail list, live discussion rooms, and regular email. You may also elect to use other tools with fellow classmates.
Online Forums (GoPosts)
Discussion of course content: readings, assignments, lectures and exercises take place in the course GoPost. I've pre-threaded the tool to allow for distinct discussions by module or other course objects. You can start new conversations in any discussion thread that is unlocked.
Collect It
Your assignments will be turned in via Collect It, a Catalyst tool. Collect It instructions.
Instructor: Instructor's name, tghill62@uw.edu
Students: See the Student Directory for this class (Note: Will not open until Friday, April 2)
Help with technology:
-
Email ihelp@uw.edu, not your instructor, when you have questions about the
web site, the chat room, Producer, Catalyst, or other
technologies that are not directly related to the content of
this course.
Help with library or research questions:
-
You can submit questions to the UW Libraries E-mail Information and Reference Service or e-mail
Nancy Huling, the UW Libraries liaison to the Information School, at hulingn@u.washington.edu.
E-mail List (Mailman)
You have all been subscribed to our course e-mail list. Mailman is the software that manages the e-mail list; see this page for more information about using Mailman.
To make a general announcement to the class, please use the general discussion forum. Please reserve the course e-mail list for time-sensitive announcements.
To post messages to the class, send a message to the e-mail list at lis537a_sp10@uw.edu
Live Discussion (Adobe Connect Pro Meeting Room)
The course meeting room is located here. The meeting room will be used for web chats, "live" guest speakers, and other synchronous course-related communication. While discussion in the meeting room may cover course topics from time to time, it is not required or graded. The chat schedule will be announced at a later date.
Chats will be held from 7-8 pm PDT each night. Typically they will be text only, though as it's useful we could also use additional video and audio tools. We might schedule other times as needed and available for guest speakers. I will post transcripts here as they become available.
Guest lectures wlll be posted to the guest lectures page as they become available. Depending on the preferences of the speaker, they may be delivered "live" in the class discussion area, recorded as voice-over-PowerPoint presentations (like the course lectures), or as audio interviews. (Note: Each year's guest lectures are archived and will be available for succeeding years' classes.)
For help with library or research questions, you can chat with UW librarians at Q&A Live.
Other Tools
You may wish to use other tools to communicate with your classmates and instructor. Examples of such tools include:

- Skype (internet telephony - VOIP)
