7. Templates

7.1 rationale

Templates allow designers to create pages that share the same design but contain different content. This has two benefits:
  1. Ease of updates: modifing the template, then directing DW to update all documents based on that template, makes design changes almost as easy as using server side includes.
  2. Only portions of a page are editable: this means that non-designers can edit content, secure in the knowledge that they cannot alter (compromise) page design. "Locked" sections cannot be edited in DW or in Contribute; "unlocked areas" (editable regions) let content editors change text (and sometimes code) at will.
