Tips on Scanning Images
Scanning
Creating an Electronic Archival Copy
- Turn on scanner
- Reboot computer
- Open PhotoShop
- Set import source
- Start scanner software
- Insert slide: facing, upside down
- Select appropriate media setting
- Click 'PREVIEW'
- Adjust scan area (leaving border around image)
- Click scan
- Close the scanning window
- Make any leveling adjustments to the scanned image in PhotoShop
- Select --> All
- Layer --> Transform --> Rotate
- Guides: click in the ruler area and drag guides out onto the image.
- Save file as a TIFF
- File --> Save
- Select TIFF in 'Save As' field
- Type filename in 'File Name' field.
Processing
Creating a Version for the Web
- Open PhotoShop CS (Version 8.0)
- Open TIFF
- Resize image
- Image --> Image Size
- Longest dimension at 550 pixels
- Save TIFF
- Make changes as needed.
- Save as file for the WEB (will automatically downsize resolution)
- File --> Save for Web
- Select 'Preset' JPEG to filename from "tif" to "jpg"
- Save
- Close TIFF. Don't Save
- Open JPG.
- Crop image
- Marquee tool
- Image --> Crop
- Save
- Modify image (as little as possible)
- Check for specks. (Use Rubber Stamp tool.)
- Save
- Add Copyright Tag
- Set foreground color (black preferred)
- Type tool
- Set in lower right-hand corner.
- Times New Roman, 11 pixels, Bold, anti-aliased
- Copyright © [date] [name]. All Rights Reserved.
- Copyright Symbol codes
- Mac: Option + g = ©
- PC: Alt + 0169 (numeric keypad) = ©
- HTML: © = ©
- Reposition as necessary (Move Tool)
- Condense image layers
- Save
