Key Exercise
Constructing keys to the plants is a useful study tool. Keys will help you pinpoint the important traits that will get you from family to genus to species. To construct a key start with a family (e.g., Rosaceae) and list the genera underneath (Prunus, Rubus, Spiraea, etc.). Then list the traits that separate the genera from each other. Next list the species and their key traits under each genera. Use the Conifer key above as an example. It was taken from a book, "Trees to Know in Oregon" (info on this book & accompanying website found on the Resources page). We have learned many trees that aren't found in Oregon, so you would need to expand the key, add additional traits, and bring it down to the species level as is shown for Pinus and Thuja.
