Internal Memorandum
To: ENGR 100 Students
From: ENGR 100 Instruction Team
Date: Today's Date
Subject: Individual Engine Report
Purpose
The purpose of this assignment is for
individual team members to demonstrate their understanding of a Briggs and
Stratton 3.5 hp engine through a written explanation.
Individual
Assignment
Write a memo that describes what you
have learned about the theory, design, and operation of an internal combustion,
(single-cylinder) four-cycle, spark-ignition engine.
The audience of this memo is an ENGR 100 student who is still confused
about how the engine works and you are trying to explain the main functions
clearly and simply.
In this memo, you will explain how
the engine works from start to finish. In
approximately two pages of text (not including pictures which are
required), trace
through how the engine works, using at a minimum the following parts in your
explanation: starter cord, starter clutch, ignition armature, carburetor, choke,
throttle, flywheel (& magnet), spark plug, piston, intake and exhaust
valves, tappets, camshaft, and crank shaft.
You also need to include the four strokes:
intake, compression, power, and exhaust.
Finally, as in any memo, include an introductory sentence that states the purpose of the memo and a conclusion that summarizes the memo. Be sure to include a header at the beginning of your memo and use section headings (e.g., “Introduction” or “The Four Stroke Process”) where appropriate.
Your group should review the questions listed in the engine web site to help prepare for writing the memo. Ask the instructor or TA if you have any questions along the way!
Grading
The memos will be graded on the
content (completeness, correctness, and clarity), organization, figures, and writing quality.
