ESRM 362 Lab Schedule

Assignments will be graded using the rubric provided here.

Labs meet on Wednesdays from 1:30 to 4:20 pm in the Douglas Classroom (DRC 103) at the Center for Urban Horticulture.

Lectures are on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10:30 to 11:20 am in FSH 260. The lecture schedule is available here.

Field trip to Yesler Creek and guest presentation by Mr. Pat Schwartzkopf.  Meet at 2:00 pm in the park (along the Burke Gilman trail) immediately south of Metropolitan Market, 5250 40th Ave NE.  Here is a map of where to meet.

Lab Assignment 1 (due 10/5)

10/7

Tour of restoration sites at UBNA and guest lecture by Dr. Kern Ewing. Meet in DRC 103 at 1:40 pm.

Read Ewing & Hoyt 2003.  Receive Lab Assignment 2 (due 10/12).

10/14

Field trip to Meadowbrook Pond and guest presentation by Ms. Deb Heiden (Seattle Public Utilities).  Meet at 2:00 pm in the parking lot of the Meadowbrook Community Center (10517 35th Ave NE).  Here is a map.

Read King County DNR 1998 (parts I, II, and III).  Focus on Case Study F (p. 22-23), which is Meadowbrook Pond.  Receive Lab Assignment 3 (due 10/19).

10/21

Field trip to Thornton Place Water Quality Channel and guest presentation by Dr. Jonathan Frodge (Seattle Public Utilities).  Meet at 2:00 pm at the head of the Thornton Place Water Quality Channel on 3rd Ave NE between NE 100th St and NE 102nd St (Thornton Place address is 301 NE 103rd St.).

Lab Assignment 4 (due 10/26)

Read "The Creek" from David B. Williams' The Street Smart Naturalist (focus on pp 61-69) and Giraldo et al.

UBNA – Planting.  Meet at 1:45 pm in the southwest parking lot of Merrill Hall at the entrance to Wahkiakum Lane.  Here is a map.

Lab Assignment 5 (due 11/2)  Read about planting seedlings and live staking.

Field trip to Interlaken Park and participation in service project with EarthCorps.  Meet at 2:00 pm just SW of the intersection of Boyer Ave E and 19th Ave E.  See map here, and service announcement for more details.
