Reading Response 1 – A Sand County Almanac

Introduction to Restoration Ecology – ESRM 362 / ENVIR 362 / CFR 590D / CFR 590F

DUE: October 28, 2009

The first reading response focuses on Part I of A Sand County Almanac. This section is called ‘A Sand County Almanac', and consists of a number of short essays from throughout the calendar year. As Leopold notes in the Foreword, these essays focus on ‘the shack', a weekend retreat for him and his family.

After reading the essays in this section, respond to the following questions:

Do they resonate with you? Do you understand the allusions that Leopold draws? What was the most difficult idea for you to understand?
What themes did you detect that are relevant for restoration ecology? Cite specific examples from the text.

Please focus most of your response on the second bullet.

Responses must be no more than 2 pages, and be submitted as PDFs through the Collect It dropbox (link on course website). Since we all have different editions, you do not need to cite texts by page number. However, you must cite them by essay title (eg, "Good Oak").
