1.1 Directors |
1.1.1 Dr. Peter Schiess, ProfessorThe University of Washington Tyee South Project was under the direction of Professor Peter Schiess. Professor Schiess obtained his Ph.D. degree from the College of Forest Resources, University of Washington in 1975. After receiving his Ph.D. degree, he has played an important role in the development of the Forest Engineering curriculum at the University of Washington. He has research interests in mechanized harvest and cable thinning operations, and is currently researching timber harvest planning as a subset of landscape level analysis. Further information regarding Dr. Schiess’s educational background, professional experience, and publications can be found athttp://faculty.washington.edu/schiess/ 1.1.2 Jeremy Tryall, TAJeremy Tryall graduated in March of 2002 from the University of Washington with a Bachelor of Science in Forest Engineering with an emphasis on GIS. He earned his Washington State EIT certification in 2001. He has worked for the DNR in their summer intern program from 1999 to 2001 as a forest engineer in Chehalis and Ellensburg. |
1.2 Technical Assistance |
1.2.1 U of W Technical Manager, Jim FridleyJim Fridley was our professor for our engineering design class. He received his PhD in mechanical engineering at the UW in 1984. As part of his class last winter quarter we developed our functional requirements and constraints for this particular harvest plan.1.2.2 U of W GIS Specialist, Phil HurvitzPhil Hurvitz was our GIS specialist and helped us out with our coverages and with the development of the maps we used out in the field.1.2.3 U of W Watershed Analysis Expert, Finn KrogstadFinn Krogstad was our watershed analysis expert and helped us out with our stream generation.1.2.4 U of W LIDAR and Visual Aesthetics Expert, Matt WalshMatt helped us with our LIDAR data and also assisted Colin with our visual aesthetic issues using envision.1.2.4 U of W Culvert Specialist, Flo DamionCulvert specialist Flo helped us out with our culvert spacing software. |
1.3 Forest Engineers |
1.3.1 Colin ForsythColin will graduate from the University of Washington after next fall with a Bachelor of Science in Forest and Environmental Engineering. The culmination of a two year research project, a book on transportation efficient urban planning, will be published within the year. He has an internship with the DNR this summer.1.3.2 Brent HorschmanBrent will graduate from the University of Washington with a BS in Forest and Environmental Engineering. For the past two summers, Brent has fought forest fires in California, Nevada, and Oregon with various private contracting crews. This summer, he will intern with the Department of Natural Resources in Ellensburg.1.3.3 Josh MattsonJosh graduated from Washington State University with a degree in mechanical engineering emphasizing in energy and environmental systems in 1999. After working for 2 ½ years as a process engineer in power plant design, he enrolled in the forest engineering curriculum at the University of Washington. He earned his EIT certification in 1999 and looks forward to a career in renewable natural resources.1.3.4 Erin MuldoonErin graduated from Olympic College in 1999 with an AAS. Has worked in the lumber industry since 1996 before than he was enlisted in the United States Marine Corp from 1990-1996.1.3.5 Kevin PilemalmKevin Pilemalm will graduate at the end of spring quarter, from the University of Washington, with a B.S. in Forest and Environmental Engineering. Last summer Kevin worked for Weyerhaeuser, in Coos Bay Oregon, as an intern in Forest Engineering. This summer Kevin is perusing a permanent position in Forest Engineering and plans on taking a little time off to relax.1.3.6 Pablo ReedPablo will finish up his forest engineering degree as well as a Latin American studies minor this upcoming summer. For almost four summers now Pablo has had the opportunity to accompany US Army Corps of Engineers personnel to various projects working as an intern with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in Guatemala.1.3.7 Mark SeversonIn June Mark will be graduating from the University of Washington with a BS in Forest and Environmental Engineering with emphasis on environmental analysis and design. Prior to graduation, he spent five months working for the Department of Natural Resources in the South Puget Sound Region. Next summer he will be working on an access plan for the Campbell Group in Cathlamet, Washington. His future goals are to obtain a professional engineering license and become filthy rich. |
