Data File Structure and File Descriptions

Overview

During this project we collected a large quantity of data. This data was created and collected in a variety of ways. These include data collected from GPS and the Criterion. Data that was create included Arc/Info coverages, Maps, and Road design data. Because of this large quantity of data it was necessary to create an organized method of storage. Below is a list of the main structure that you will find on the CD included with the report.

The following pages will give you a detailed description of the type of information that is contained in the different directories. There will also be a description of the files, how to read the naming of the files, descriptions of the various subdirectories, and how you can use these files.

Criterion Data

We used the Criterion for a large portion of the Field Portion of the project. We initially went in flagging the road. Then after it was verified that it would work, the Criterion was brought in to P-Line the Road. We also used the Criterion to collect data on two bridge site surveys. All of the data collected from the Criterion was stored in the \TOUTLE\CRITDATA directory. There are two types of file extensions used. All files with extensions of S*, where the * consists of a number, were the files downloaded from the Criterion. Files that have an extension of POL were files that have been edited in EXCEL to have the correct data structure to be used by RoadEng. Below is a list of the file names and what data is contained in the file.

GPS Data

GPS was used quite a bit through this project. Its main purpose was to allow us the opportunity to study the transportation system of the main roads in the Toutle Block. It also gave us the ability to give the data collected with the Criterion Real World Coordinates in X, Y, and Z. There are two file extensions, COR and SSF. COR files have been corrected. The SSF files are directly downloaded from GPS unit. Following are a list of names and sub-directories found in the \TOUTLE\GPSDATA directory.

1997 Forest Engineering Handbook

This is the handbook used by the Forest Engineering Students and updated by the Forest Engineering Students. This is the final copy finished in June of 1997. It is a Word Document in 6.0 format with the name of HNDBK97.DOC. There is also a file called CRI2RDNG.DOC that is contained in the handbook but was also kept as a separate file for easy access. It containes information on how to transfer data from the Criterean unit the RoadEng.

SNAP Data

A SNAP run was completed on the Toutle River Transportation System. The following files in the \TOUTLE\SNAPFILE directory are the base files put into SNAP to run the analysis. There is also included a copy of the version of SNAP that we used.

SNAP Results

The results for the SNAP run have been stored in the \TOUTLE\SNAPFILE\TOUTLE directory. A brief description of some of the files follows.
