Genetic software
We will use genetic-related software made freely available by their
authors. The software has been downloaded to the computers in FSH 136,
but if you wish to download the packages for private use, the home pages
are listed below. The most useful program to learn to use is MS Excel.
EvoTutor (Lemmon) - a useful
interactive learning tool for understanding an array of genetic principles.
PopG (Felsentein) - a great learning tool for testing all the principles
introduced in the first few weeks.
The NCBI website for nucleotide
searches, and for downloading submitted sequences.
ClustalW - an EMBL tool,
used for aligning sequences
Mega (Kumar, Tamura, Jakobsen,
Nei) - a simple program for phylogeny reconstruction
Genepop (Raymond and Rousset) - for population genetic analyses (Hardy
Weinberg, tests for homogeneity, F statistics).
The Web based version is here and the downloadable version is here
Vortex (Lacy,
R) - Population Viability Analyses (we will use a windows
version of this package).
WhichParents (Eichert & Hedgecock) - Kinship analysis by exclusion
