Contact extension if you need further clarification. This includes
the best info I
could assemble on creating the computer accounts, if this doesn't
work we
will need to contact C&C.
Information for Extension Students in the FISH 497 U Course
UW Extension Enrollment Confirmation
Each Extension student registered in the course will receive an
enrollment
confirmation (usually a two page sheet) which is their proof to
the UW that
they are enrolled in a credit course and entitled to various UW
services.
Students who registered by phone or FAX will receive this confirmation
in
the mail.
If a student has misplaced or lost their confirmation they should
contact
the Extension's Registration Department to get another one.

at UW
Extension only.

your class.
Please keep a copy of your number in a safe place. UW and Extension
I.D.

UW Library access
Students in Extension programs can check out materials at UW libraries
beginning the first day of the quarter for which they are enrolled.
Thestudent's UW Extension enrollment confirmation must be presented
at the
library to receive a bar-coded library card. Go to any of the
following
libraries to get your bar-coded library card: Suzzallo, Odegaard,
Natural
Sciences, Engineering, or the Bothell and Tacoma campus libraries.
UW Computer Accounts
All credit students pay a technology fee based on the number of
credits for
which they are enrolled. The technology fee gives students access
to the
Internet, World Wide Web, email, computer and multimedia workstations
and
laboratories, computer software and dial-up telephone service.

Creating a UW Computer Account on Homer (or Dante):
Summary of Steps to create a Homer computer account (see details
below):
1) create a UW NetID through the UW's web site
2) access the UW's Homer (or Dante) computer through a modem connection
on
your computer:
either by
a) obtaining the UWICK software package from the UW or
b) by dialing in to the appropriate phone number using your computer's
existing connectivity software
3) create a new account on Homer by following the "new" login
procedure
UW NETID
You will need to create a UW NetID to be able to access the UW's
Uniform
Access computers (homer and dante). The UW NetID is the personal
network
identification that gives you access to computing services at
the University
of Washington, including:
Campus computing labs
C&C dial-in modems
UW email
Uniform Access Unix computing accounts
Web publishing
UW NetID Services requires Netscape 2.02 or higher or Internet
Explorer 3.01
orhigher to ensure a secure connection (Netscape 4.0 or Internet
Explorer 4
are recommended).
To protect your privacy, exit your Web browser when you finish
checking or
configuring your UW NetID Services.
If you need a computer with a secure Web browser, you can go to
the UWired
Commons in Odegaard Undergraduate Library or the UWired Computing
Resource
Center in Suzzallo Library (see
www.washington.edu/uwired/students/palces/campus_labs.html).
To create your UW NetID, access the Web at:
http://www.washington.edu/computing/uwnetid/
You will be asked to provide: name, date of birth, student number
(UW 7
digit number), and your STAR Private Access Code (PAC).
STAR is the UW's telephone system for accessing grade information.
If you have never used the STAR system before, use your birth
date in the
form MMDDYY in place of the PAC number.
If you have ever used the STAR system before, you chose a PAC
and you must
enter this PAC. If you don't remember your PAC, contact the Registrar's
office at 206-534-4000 for assistance.
2) Connect to the Homer computer
You can connect with the Homer computer using the C&C modem pool
numbers as soon as you have:
your UW NetID (Uniform Access account login name) and password
connectivity software installed on your personal computer**
a modem connected to or installed in the computer
a phone connected to the modem
**The UW Internet Connectivity Kit (UWICK) available at the University
BookStore (or its campus branches) contains connectivity software
customized to use the UW dial-in modem pool numbers. The UWICK
software costs $17 and includes software and instructions for
connecting your computer to the
Internet, software to browse the Web, and Dr. Solomon's virus
protection
software.
When you are connecting from a computer that does not have the
latest
version of UWICK installed, use one of the following phone numbers
to
connect with your modem.
If you are calling from the Seattle area, students use:
206-812-5577 for 33,600 (V.34) maximum bps
206-685-7796 for 14,400 (V.32 bis)
206-685-5588* for 14,400 (V.32 bis) * express connection - 15
minute limit
Phone numbers for students dialing from other areas are listed
at:
http://www.washington.edu/computing/data/dialins.html
3) To create your account on the Homer computer:
specify that the computer you want to access is homer
create your login name and password by typing "new" at the login
prompt
and following the
directions.
