Overview and Grading

The aim of this six-lecture course is to introduce students to the basics of the statistical package R, and to prepare them for the Advanced Programing in R course. The lecture series will cover how to read data into R, how to manipulate data in R, how to perform simple statistical analyses in R, and how to create simple graphs in R. Students completing this course will have the required background to take Advanced Programing in R FISH 497E.

Instruction will occur during four 2-hour lecture-lab sessions which will be held February 10 - 26. All instruction will occur in the computer lab (FISH 136) with each participant at a computer (although the use of personal laptops will be encouraged). Grading will be credit/no credit and the evaluation of performance will be based on completing two homework assignments (due Tuesdays February 17 and February 24).

Note that this class is being offered as the first in a two-part series to be optionally followed by FISH 497C: Advanced R Programming during March 3 - 19.
