Final Project Ideas
Spring 2010

Final project ideas can come from multiple sources. If one is familiar with course material, then they can easily establish what a good final project needs to look like. Following the course schedule you can identify the following topics:

• Sustainability Indicators and Data Measurement
• Data Coordinates and Map Projections
• Data Classification and Symbolization

In general, some good sources for project ideas can be derived from the following:

• A connection with topics already discussed in class (like the ones mentioned above), with a deeper investigation of the topic.
• Work done in another course, even non-Geography courses. Educational “synergy” can develop when a student works on a GIS project that relates to a topic within another course.

Discussion with other students is encouraged when deciding which projects to undertake. Communication not only helps refine ideas, but allows us to discover new ideas and define new aspects of problems we may have not formalized yet. Your TAs are also here to help you formalize a project idea, and are always available through email or lab sessions and office hours.
