Lab Sections

Since the UW is closed to in-residence classes, the Geography Labs are closed.

Purpose of Lab Sections

The lab component of this course is meant to offer an opportunity to practice using GIS concepts through applied assignments. It provides an opportunity to construct a deeper understanding of the ideas presented in lecture and demonstrates how the fundamental concepts of GIS are implemented in a software programs. Lab assignments provide a chance for you to think about how these concepts can be applied.  The long-term goal of the lab experience is to help you construct a framework for applying GIS in other contexts outside of this class.

To facilitate this experience, the lab component is organized as a realistic social and technical learning experience that enables you to share your insights and results with others in a collaborative workflow process.

The instructors would like to make the Geography learning experience as effective as possible.  Please do not hesitate to ask instructors if you have any questions.

Lab Performance Expectations

Emphasis in the lab sections is on supporting how students can take responsibility for their learning.  Your responsibilities include:

·       making sure that you have finished the lab that is due for the day prior to coming to your lab section;

·       a willingness to use all resources available, including the handouts, user guides and computerized help – not just the TA;

·       and most importantly, curiosity and interest in the labs.

This class involves considerable work, and will require at least 15 hours of GEOG 496 time on task as the policy of UW is 3 hours for every credit hour.

Getting Access to ArcGIS Desktop Software

Authorization Code: Email Professor Nyerges for an ArcGIS Desktop authorization code before you start the download and activation process.  You will need the authorization code to activate the software.

  1. Check our system requirements to make sure your computer has the hardware and software required for the trial.
  2. Uninstall any previous versions of ArcGIS that you may already have on your machine. The software cannot be installed on a computer that has a previous version of ArcGIS Desktop or ArcGIS for Server installed. For best results, please download and use the ArcGIS Uninstall Utility (you will find it after the step 6).
  3. Visit www.esri.com/StudentEdition to begin the process of activating and downloading your ArcGIS Desktop Student Trial software.
  4. Log in using your Existing Esri Global Account, or Sign-up for a new Esri Global account, if necessary.
  5. Enter the authorization code and click Activate ArcGIS (If you received the ArcGIS Desktop software already or will be installing from a network server, proceed to step 10).
  6. Select and click ArcGIS Desktop 10.7.1.
  7. Download ArcGIS Desktop, Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5, and the files you would like to install. If you didn't download the files at the time you registered, you must repeat the process to get to the download option.
  8. Install the Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1.
  9. Install and authorize ArcGIS Desktop.
  10. Select all possible extensions.
