What students can expect to learn from the course:
This course is designed to introduce students to the various literary genres of the
German tradition (lyric, prose, and drama) using examples from the eighteenth to the
twentieth century. Students learn to apply the mechanics of analyzing poetry, prose,
and drama to a meaningful interpretation of the individual texts.
General method of instruction:
The general method of instruction is through lectures and classroom discussions. The
language of instruction is German.
Recommended preparation for success in the course:
We recommend that the student have completed German 203 or equivalent.
General nature of assignments:
Readings of up to 30 pages of text in German (depending on difficulty) are assigned for
every class meeting. Students write three 5-6 page papers on assigned topics relating
to the three genres.
Basis on which grades are assigned:
Grades are based on participation and written assignments.
