Tips for Transition

·   Have credentialing paperwork accessible and ready to fax or copy for clerkship sites. Specific items you might be asked to include:

o  Criminal background check

o  HIPAA

o  Immunizations—you will have to work with Hall Health to submit forms

o  Social Security number—you will be asked to provide your SSN by sites to set-up computer access

o  Date of birth/birthplace

o  Site specific application forms

·   Students take a required Year IV Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) in the summer following your third year. Keep track of when the OSCE is offered each year and get more information about preparing for the OSCE at http:uwosce.blogspot.com

·   Seattle pagers generally do not work in Spokane. Check with the clerkship coordinator or our office (Janie) before getting a new one or converting the number as you may not need a pager.

·   Have your Health Sciences Building after-hours access card and make sure it’s activated. You will need to use this card if assigned to UWMC.

·   Have your ORCA/MINDscape/IRIS access login and password. You will need this login and password for UW and HMC computer systems. If you do not have your password, call the help desk, 206-543-7012.

·   Grades are available to students 4-6 weeks after completion of the clerkship. Exam scores are not available prior to the final grade.

·   Contact the clerkship sites at least 1-2 weeks ahead of time.

·   Submit any site requirements as soon as requested before or at the start of clerkship.

·   Notify clerkship sites immediately if you think your housing needs have or will change. It is often impossible at the last minute to find more room for you.

·   Any possible requests for being away from the clerkship has to be discussed well in advance. Read the absence guidelines before contacting anyone.

·   Review the web sites before you arrive. Make time for this before you are in the last week of the previous clerkship. Curriculum often gets updated.

·   Check the website for what site-specific documents you will need to provide at least 6 weeks before.

·   For healthcare needs in the WWAMI region, check out www.beechstreet.com to find a preferred provider that is covered by the Student Health Insurance Plan. Even if the provider isn’t on the  network, you can still use your insurance but you will have to pay a higher percentage for the visit.

·   For counseling in the region, you can also try and locate a Beech Street provider. For ‘provider type’, look for Licensed Professional Counselor, Social Worker, or Psychologist. If you can’t locate a counselor, the medical student counselors in Seattle are glad to schedule telephone visits. Just email or call one to schedule a time.

·   Check prerequisites before calling. All WWAMI clerkships require permission to add and drop.

·   All adds and drops that are less than 6 weeks away require permission.

·   Last day of clerkship ends at 5pm.

·   Write down things you have questions about so you always have something to discuss with the resident or attending.

·   During the last week of a rotation, do research and find a recent article about something the team has a question about and then give a “mini-presentation” on it to the team.

·   Always read just a little bit before the lecture so you have a tiny bit of info to work with for the ‘Socratic method’ of teaching.

·   Classic stuff—be on time, be enthusiastic, care about your patients, always ask if there is anything else you can do to help, smile. Cannot stress the importance of this enough!
