Course Description Capstone
I is a required course aimed at smoothing your transition to 3rd
year. Lectures will cover important
aspects of life on the wards: team structure, what to do (and what not to do),
legal requirements and issues, and infection control. Small
group sessions will focus on skills you’ll need for the wards: placing IVs,
drawing blood gases, managing team dynamics and more. Course
Objectives At the
completion of this course, students will be able to: 1.
Describe
the roles and responsibilities of members of the medical team. 2.
Describe
indications for and steps in performing basic procedures. 3.
Write
basic admission orders 4.
Demonstrate
the principles of effective team communication for safe patient care 5.
Appropriately order common diagnostic studies. 6.
Recognize
and respond to student mistreatment 7.
Demonstrate
respect for patients of all cultures Eligibility to
Take HuBio 600a Capstone I: Transition to
Clerkships All students, including
those in concurrent degree program or year-out research projects,
are required to complete the Transition to Clerkships course at the end of
the second year (or completion of HuBio curriculum
for expanded student) regardless of whether the students will be entering the
clinical curriculum that year, and need to register through MyUW for Capstone I - HuBio 600A: Transition to Clerkships for the Spring
Quarter (registration is open February 20-March 29). MSTP students or students
taking a year out are also encouraged to audit the relevant portion of the course as needed
after the completion of their graduate or year-out work prior to entering the
clinical curriculum. Course Time and
Location The 2009
Capstone I course will run from May 28 to May 29, 2009. Classes will be held
from 8:00-4:20 pm each day in various rooms throughout Health Sciences and
the medical center (T5wing, T4 lecture halls, T6 labs, Directions to Go to the main lobby of UWMC on the third
floor. Keep walking (south) past the gift shop and the Cascade
elevators, over the sky bridge to the Surgery Pavilion. Take the spiral
staircase or the elevators down to the first floor of the surgery
pavilion. The ISIS Lab is behind (south of) the staircase, on the first
floor. Course Materials Materials for lectures
will be available on our web site and can easily be downloaded. Some
lecturers will have Word documents, PDF, and/or Power Point Slides. Materials
will be continuously updated so please check the web site prior to
presentations. Grades The course is Credit/No
Credit. Your grade is solely dependent on your attendance, which is tracked
by the evaluations you submit for each session. Feedback We value your feedback!
