Final Project Details
For the Final Project, you may either:
The conversation is between two individuals getting to know each other. Each participant must take turns in initiating the conversation, i.e., share something and ask a question. A typical sequence:
A: Hello, I’m Ram, and you are…?
B: I’m Shyam. I live in Tacoma. Where do you live?
A: I live in the U District in a 2 bedroom apartment with my best friend. Where do you live?
… and so on …
This conversation must have an opening and a closing section:
Opening:
Closing:
The monologue serves essentially the same purpose as the conversation, but is only one-sided. In the monologue, you must still greet your audience, introduce yourself, touch on the topics below and end with a closing section, on how you had fun (I hope) preparing this monologue and you hope that the audience enjoyed it too. Thank the audience for listening attentively.
In between the open and close, the conversation/monologue must touch upon four or more of the following topics (you are encouraged to use the conversation sentences you have been preparing each week, a summary of which is attached on the following page):
· Where one is from, where one grew up
· Talk about what one is studying
· About where one lives now, with or without family
· About ones family
· Future plans after completing school
o Career
o Travel
o Residence
· Memorable past travels
· Favorite books and movies
· Favorite foods
The entire conversation/monologue must be at least 20 exchanges (question and answer) where the answer is a Complex Sentence. (A complex sentence is one that has multiple verbs and/or clauses). If partnering, each partner is responsible for their half of the exchange, i.e., the question he/she asks as well as his/her answer to it when the partner responds “… and you?”). Presenters must be able to conduct the conversation or deliver the monologue in class, without looking at the Hindi script. Flash cards with English prompts are allowed (no romanized Hindi J)
The final oral exam, a 10 minute unscripted interview between the teacher and student will be based on a similar format, i.e. a conversation between the instructor and the student based on the final project, either the conversation or the monologue.
The project is to be worked on regularly, with intermediate submissions of the portions completed each Friday (Feb 20, Feb 27). The completed project is to be turned in on Friday, March 6 at the beginning of class. You are encouraged to use your instructor/TA as a resource for this project.
The first intermediate submission on the Final Project will be turned in at the end of Week 7 (Friday, Feb 20). By then you need to:
1.Decide if you are working with a partner or individually. If working with a partner, have the partnership approved by your instructor who may suggest a different partnership to balance ability and challenge for the assignment.
2.Decide which four (or more) topics your conversation/monologue will focus on.
3.From the topics you choose, pick one to work on for the first submission (due Friday, Feb 20).
4.Regardless of whether a partnership or individual project, prepare independently, in grammatical Hindi, in writing, five questions/statements you talk about. Please supply an English translation so I can figure out what you’re trying to say (not that this will be necessary!). Submit these at the start of class on Friday, Feb 20.
5.Also mention on your submission, whether your project is an individual monologue or a partnered conversation, and if so, who your partner is.
We will look through your submissions and hand them back to you on Monday with corrections/suggestions. If partnering, you and your partner can then select from all of your combined submissions, the best 4-6 questions on that topic. For the ones that were from your partner's list, prepare your answers too.
Meanwhile, over the following week (Week 8), be thinking along the same lines for the remaining three (or more) topics. By Friday, Feb 27, you will each turn in your individual work to me on these remaining topics.
In Week 9, if partnering, you will merge your individual submissions with those of your partner, and perhaps add some follow-up sentences, to create the most interesting conversation/monologue! By Friday, March 6 you will each turn in a full script with the Opening and Closing sections added. Number your sentences C1, C2, … for complex sentences, and S1, S2, … for simple sentences. On the top of your final submission, write the total Cn + Sn/3 (which should be 20 or greater). On Wed & Thur, March 11-12, we'll share the highlights of your prepared conversations/monologue in class, acted out theatrically, with costumes J Also in week 9, you will sign up (individually) for a 10 minute oral exam based on your conversation to be held outside of class hours during weeks 9 & 10.
Don’t be afraid to take risks and challenge yourself in doing this project and show off your creativity! Humor is always appreciated!!
