Homework Assignments for Weeks 3 and 4
(All references are to the Teach Yourself Hindi textbook)

Assignments marked with the symbol ! are to be done in writing and turned in to be corrected and graded. The symbol marks assignments to be prepared for conversations.

For Tuesday, January 20.  Read carefully TYH, section 8.2 (Primer 23.5)
!  [HW3a] Using continuous verb forms, translate into Hindi: 
  1. Shiva (proper noun, m.) was speaking.
  2. I (m.) am thinking.
  3. We (m.) are not buying.
  4. You (तूm.) are not asking about my store.
  5. She is coming from Delhi.
  6. We (m.) are going to Mumbai.
  7. Lakshmi (prop. n. f, respect) was reading a book.
  8. Sangeeta was writing a letter to Kṛṣṇa.
  9. Ram's younger brother was making a plan.
  10. I (f.) was calling the wrong number.
  11. She was saying that I am not coming home tomorrow.
For Wednesday, January 21.  Memorize Conversation 8b.  [HW3b] Prepare (in Hindi, in writing) these additional questions and their responses (provide English translation of your responses to help us understand what you are trying to say):
1.        Do you have any pencils?
2.        How many brothers and sisters do you have?
3.        Are they living with you? Or are you living alone?
4.        How many [pairs of] shoes do you have?
5.        Do you have a cold?
6.        Do you have a car?
7.        Do you have time to see a movie tonight? Which one are you seeing?
8.        What are you doing after this class?
9.        What were you doing yesterday evening?
 
For Thursday, January 22. Read remainder of grammar sections in TYH, Chapter 8. Supplemental reading, Primer, 10.3 (Adverbs), 19.7 (Dates).  ! [HW3c]  Do in writing exercises 8a.1, 8a.2 and 8b.1.
 
For Friday, January 23.   Memorize Conversation 8b.  [HW3d] Prepare (in Hindi, in writing) these additional questions and their responses (provide English translation of your responses):
1.     What is today’s date?
2.     Where are you staying right now?
3.     Where will you eat dinner (रात का खाना/भोजन) today? (use continuous tense)
4.     What are you eating for dinner?
5.     What are you doing at this university (विश्वविद्यालयm)?
 
! [HW3e] Translate each of the following into Hindi (do this assignment on a separate sheet of paper than the conversation questions above):
1.       The post office is to the left of the hospital.
2.       He is talking loudly with her.
3.       Her birthday is next month, on Feb. 2.
4.       Listen attentively every day!
5.       We are going to Kathmandu on the 31st of Jan.
6.       At what time is Ajay coming to your house?
7.       Please drive the car carefully and arrive punctually.
8.       She is standing outside, under my window. (Hint: use होना)
9.       How does Mr. Khanna drive? Very badly!
10.   Sangeeta is quickly showing me her stories.

For Monday, January 26.   Prepare for vocabulary quiz on Chapter 8 (including numbers 60-70, days of the weeks, Hindi names of months in the Western calendar system).
 
For Tuesday, January 27.  Prepare for unit test on TYH, Chapter 8. The test will be 30 min. long, after which we will start on Conv 9a in class (no need to prepare).
 
For Wednesday, January 28.  Prepare carefully reading passage that will be passed out in class on Monday, January 28.

For Thursday, January 29.  Read carefully TYH, sections 9.1-9.3, and Primer, 13.3 (Future), 7.1 (presumptive only).

For Friday, January 30.   Memorize carefully TYH, conversation 9a.  [HW4a] Prepare (in Hindi, in writing) these additional questions and their responses:
  1. What work will you do after finishing school?
  2. Where will you work?
  3. Will you see a movie this weekend (सप्ताहांतm)? Which one? (or Why not?)
  4. Will you study tonight? With whom? (or Why not?)
For Monday, February 2! [HW5a] Write in your best formal Hindi a short paragraph (consisting of at least 10 sentences) entitled मेरा परिवार.  In this paragraph describe either your real family or a fictive family, enumerating the members of the family and giving some basic facts about them.  In the course of the paragraph make sure you use each of the present imperfective, past imperfective, present continuous, past continuous, and future tenses. Provide an English translation of your paragraph.
 
For Tuesday, February 3. Read TYH, sections 9.4, 9.5, and 9.6 and Primer, 8.5 (ही and भी).  ! [HW5b] Do exercises 9a.1 and 9b.2.
