Homework Assignments for Weeks 5 and 6
(All references are to the Teach Yourself Hindi textbook)

Assignments marked with the symbol ! are to be done in writing and turned in to be corrected and graded. The symbol marks assignments to be prepared for conversations.

For Monday, February 4.  ! [HW5a] Write in your best formal Hindi a short paragraph (consisting of at least 10 sentences) entitled मेरा परिवार.  In this paragraph describe either your real family or a fictive family, enumerating the members of the family and giving some basic facts about them.  In the course of the paragraph make sure you use each of the present imperfective, past imperfective, present continuous, past continuous, and future tenses. Provide an English translation of your paragraph.
 
For Tuesday, February 5. Read TYH, sections 9.4, 9.5, and 9.6 and Primer, 8.5 (ही and भी).  ! [HW5b] Do exercises 9a.1 and 9b.2.
 
For Wednesday, February 6.   Memorize TYH conversation 9b. [HW5c] Prepare (in Hindi, in writing) these additional questions and their responses:
  1. Do you read stories? Which ones?
  2. What is your favorite book? Why?
  3. Do you think they will make a movie of your favorite book?  Why (not)?
For Thursday, February 7.  Prepare for vocabulary quiz on Chapter 9 (including numbers 70-80). [HW5d] Do, by way of review, exercises 9b.2 and 9b.3.

For Friday, February 8.  Prepare for unit test on Chapter 9.

For Monday, February 11.   Read carefully sections 10.1 and 10.2, both of which deal with the subjunctive. Also read Primer 7.1 (subjunctive section), 13.1 [Note: Mon & Tue for Week 6 swapped relative to your Schedule Grid)

For Tuesday, February 12.  Memorize Conversation 10a. [HW6a] Prepare (in Hindi, in writing) these additional questions and their responses:

  1. Perhaps you might know Hindi?
  2. For how long have you been learning (lit: are learning) this language?
  3. Do you think that if you were in India, you would talk to Indians in Hindi?
  4. Why (not)?

For Wednesday, February 13.  Read carefully section 10.5 & Primer, 12.3. 

For Thursday, February 14.  Read carefully sections 10.3 and 10.4. Supplemental reading: Primer, 16.1, 24.1 ! [HW6c] Using the grammar and vocabulary you have learned, write in your best Hindi, 8 conditional sentences.  Provide English translations of the Hindi sentences you have formed.

For Friday, February 15.   Memorize Conversation 10b. [HW6b] Prepare (in Hindi, in writing) these additional questions and their responses – in answer to these questions, provide multiple sentences, details:

  1. If you had a lot of money, what would you do?
  2. What do your parents want you to do?
  3. What do you want to do?

For Monday,  February 18 .  PRESIDENTS’ DAY – NO CLASS

For Tuesday, February 19.   Prepare for vocabulary quiz on Chapter 10 (including numbers 80-90).

For Wednesday, February 20.  Prepare for unit test on Chapter 10.
