Final Project Details

Rev 1.0

For the Final Project this quarter, the goal is simply the production of good, grammatical and comprehensible Hindi. The content can be anything of your choice, as long as it satisfies a few simple criteria:

1.       You must develop and submit a Hindi script for your project, with translation.

2.       This script must be your creation, no copying of existing material.

3.       It should be comprehensible by your classmates. Entertaining and/or edifying is also recommended J

4.       This script must be at least 25 “reasonably complex sentences” long. For the purpose of this assignment, a “reasonably complex sentences” is one that either has multiple clauses or more than twelve words. Simple sentences such as “मेरा नाम राम प्रसाद है ।“ and “आज का मौसम बहुत अच्छा है ।“ count as a third of a “complex sentence,” i.e., you will need three such sentences to count as one “complex sentence”.

5.       You will present your project verbally in front of the class during class time between June 2 and June 4 (determined by sign-up sheet circulated in Week 8)

6.       Your project proposal is approved by your instructor

You have the option of working individually or in pairs with another student. If you partner with someone, the partnership must be approved by your instructor, and each of you must take responsibility for producing 25 complex sentences. Even if you work jointly, you will need to show your contribution separately.

The goal is to have your project script developed, completed and turned in on Tuesday, May 26 at the start of class. Late submissions will have 25% deducted. You will have an entire week, including the weekend to work on preparing for your class performance after your final submission. Flash cards or cheat sheets to assist you in your performance will be permitted, as long as they contain only English and no romanization J.  The project is to be worked on regularly, with intermediate submissions of the portions completed each Monday. All submissions are to be turned in at the beginning of class.  You are encouraged to use your instructor/TA as a resource for this project.

Important dates for your project:

Week 6: Wed, May 6            Submit project proposal in writing

Week 7: Mon, May 11          Turn in First rough draft                         (at least 1/3rd the final length)

Week 8: Mon, May 18          Turn in Second rough draft         (at least 2/3rd the final length)

Week 9: Tues, May 26          Turn in Final Project

Some suggestions for projects:

With your submission:

A. Provide a translation (just in case we can't quite figure out what you are trying to convey).
B. Number your sentences S1, S2 … (for simple sentences) and C1, C2 … (for complex sentences). At the top of your submission (intermediate or final) provide a total sentence count: X simple sentences, Y complex sentences. For the final submission the total of X + 3*Y must be greater than or equal to 75. If working with a partner, each individual is responsible for this count separately.

The final oral exam, a 10 minute unscripted interview between the teacher and student, held in Weeks 9-10, will be based partly on your final project and will include basic Q&A from the Scripted Conversations you have developed this quarter.

The Final Project constitutes 10% of your overall grade for this quarter and the Oral Exam accounts for 10% of the final exam.  Any revisions to the Final Project and Oral Exam criteria will be available online at the class web page.
