Homework Assignments for Weeks 1 and 2

(All references are to the Teach Yourself Hindi textbook)


Assignments marked with the symbol ! are to be done in writing and turned in to be corrected and graded.


For Tuesday, March 31. 

Read carefully the grammar in section 13.1, which deals with relative clause constructions involving time. 

 

For Wednesday, April 1.

Review Cardinal Numbers in TYH Appendix 1, Primer 11.2, particularly हज़ार, लाख, करोड़ & अरब (the last is not in TYH, look up in OHD); Ordinal Numbers, TYH 7.4; Aggregatives, TYH 7.5. We will also cover fractions, Primer 13.8, in class.

! [HW1a] Translate each of the following sentences into Hindi.

1.  When you change your (own) clothes, we will go to the market.

2.  I haven't eaten anything since I (fem.) returned home.

3.  When he says (so) call (i.e. phone) me.

4.  When you came to Seattle I was living in that old red house.

5.  She won't eat until Chotu arrives.

6. As soon as she bought the expensive camera she started to regret (it).

7. I've been speaking (lit. ‘am speaking’) only in Hindi since I've been in India (lit. 'from when I am in India').

 

For Thursday, April 2.

Read carefully grammar sections 13.2, 13.3, 13.5 and 13.6.  See also Primer 17.1-3, 16.2 (first two paragraphs only), 16.3.


For Friday, April 3.

Memorize Conversation 13a.

! [HW1b] Translate each of the following sentences into Hindi:

1. We ought to sell the car;                                  2. I ought to have drunk the tea;

3. The children should have eaten the mangoes.  4. I have to go to Delhi;             

5. Yesterday's weather should have been good;    6. We had to stay at home (extnl. compulsion);

7. Father had to (external compulsion) clean the house yesterday;

8. I will have to catch a bus at four o'clock;        

9. You will need to learn Urdu when you go to Pakistan.


For Monday, April 6.

Prepare for vocabulary quiz on Chapter 13 and all numbers, time expressions and fractions.

Also review TYH 13 grammar covered so far. Do Exercises 13a.1-3 and be prepared to answer questions on these in class. (These will not be turned in).


For Tuesday, April 7. 

Read carefully grammar section 13.4.


For Wednesday, April 8.

Memorize Conversation 13b.1! [HW2a] Do exercise 13b.1


For Thursday, April 9.  

! [HWsc1] Write out sentences for µ Spoken Conversation #1 per vocabulary and script in handout.


For Friday, April 10.

Prepare for Unit Test on Chapter 13.


For Monday, April 13.

Prepare for µ Spoken Conversation #1, memorize your prepared sentences.

Read carefully grammar section 14.1 on the passive, Primer 17.5.
